How to Saw Career Fair's Horns Off

With the Liberal Arts Career Fair on the horizon (September 29th from 10 am-3pm), it seemed necessary to create a post all about it! Career Fairs are typically a stressful time, but you have the 12th man on your side. Here are a few tips that will help you get the most out of your Career Fair experience.

Prepare for battle. This one might seem obvious, but you can never be too prepared. Take your time to research what companies will be in attendance. You'll want to show the representatives that you’re both well informed and interested. Bring more resumes than you think you need, a pen, and something to take notes on.

Use your time wisely. Lines can be long, so arrive early! Locate the booths you want to speak with and decide an efficient order in which you should visit them. If you know you want to visit popular booths, you should factor in some time for standing in line.

Be direct. Extend your hand, say hello, and state your name. Welcome the employer to TAMU! Starting immediately with the pitch you’ve practiced will show initiative and confidence. Bring the conversation to points you want to discuss, and let them know you mean business.

Follow up. After the fair, apply online to the positions you sought after. Send the representative an email as well! It will give you an advantage over the applicants that don’t. Some experts even suggest giving the representative a phone call after the fair and thanking them for their time. Whether you email or call, it is important to restate your interests and qualifications after thanking them. Here’s a good example of a follow up email.

Practice on companies you don’t care as much about. If you get nervous when talking under pressure, it might be a good idea to have a trial run and get out your jitters. Take a few minutes to talk with a representative you don't actually want to work for, purely for practice. Talking to future employers can be nerve racking, especially when you’re trying to sell yourself.

Have fun. Employers are looking for passion and enthusiasm. Don’t be afraid to show them who you are! Smile and let your personal attributes shine. Each company is bound to hear very similar speeches from many students, so make yourself stand out.

Represent TAMU well. Remember that this is a very professional setting. Put on your best get-up, smile, and make us proud!
